The 7th annual VT Wiffle Ball Tournament
to Benefit the Travis Roy Foundation was held on August
8-10, 2008 and featured
24 teams from
across New England and New York. The teams
combined to raise more than $180,000 to
help spinal cord injury survivors and fund
vital research.
The
Jackhammers took home the trophy, defeating
the Nite Feeders in the final game.
The Nite Feeders led the Jackhammers 4-3
in the bottom of the 6th behind the
pitching/hitting of Eric Frank when John
Rivers launched a three-run homer to give
the 'Hammers a 6-4 lead. A home run in the
top of the 7th for the Nite Feeders closed
the gap to 6-5 but would come no closer as
the underdog Jackhammers became the 2008
Cinderella story. Jack Shadduck was
named the MVP for his inspirational
leadership of this team.
The Boston
Beef may have gone down in the
quarterfinals but they regained the top of
the podium in pledges, raising $28,000.
Chris Sleeper of the Terriers won
the honors as the individual garnering the
most in pledges with $10,000 raised. The
$180,000 raised in 2008 surpasses the
record mark set in 2007 and brings the
seven year tally to nearly $480,00 raised
for spinal cord injury survivors and
research!
Special guests at the event included:
VT Governor Jim Douglas, Reigning Miss
Vermont Ashley Ruth Wheeler, Red
Sox great Bill Momboquette, former
UVM standout and current Vancouver Canucks
defenseman Aaron Miller, and Red
Sox/Montreal Expos great Bill Lee.
